Open the Door to Success!

Many of my clients are highly motivated and desire success but then wonder with dismay why they are not achieving their goals. They naturally find this to be particularly frustrating when others around them seem to be moving forward effortlessly. key to success

After all, why is it that the top companies habitually achieve success?

Well, let me tell you a terrific secret...they rigorously follow these steps:

1.The Cascade process of growing your business.

This is all about setting goals to achieve growth. Did you know that the top 1% of students graduating from Harvard University earned more than the other 99% combined?

How? Well they wrote down what they wanted to achieve and this acted as a set of success targets that they continually referred to. By clearly establishing what they wanted to achieve and reminding themselves of it lead to their increased success.

Whilst it's useful to be sceptical about the real basis of this story, I think the point is well made.

So in a business context wouldn’t it be great if you could:

  • Increase your sales by 10%
  • Increase your customers by 10%, and
  • Increase the frequency that you make your sales to clients by 10%
Use this “Cascade process” as you establish the goals for your business.

2. Get beyond the advertising myth.

Ready for a real shock…MOST advertising does NOT work! Stop

Many businesses I know advertise in a particular publication because their competitors have done so. They also neglect to measure if they have gained any success from the advert and continue to pay high costs through habit.

If advertising works for you it CAN be a brilliant way of getting business. BUT remember the following rules:

  • If advertising is not working (i.e. no new sales) then STOP doing it.
  • Be SMART Test and Measure all of your advertising.
  • Don’t advertise on a left hand page. It has been shown that fewer people read them than right hand pages.
  • Use your advert Headline to attract interest.
  • Don't pay the first price you are offered. The publisher wants your business, so be confident and prepared to walk away - you could save more than 30% on the advert price!

3. Transform your Internet Marketing

Here’s another shocking statistic…less than 1% of people who visit your website will take any action as a result of their visit.

So, when people do visit you must find ways to make them stay and come back again. This is done through “benefits orientated copy”. You must show your visitors the benefits to them from visiting your site.

Don’t fall into the trap of making an all out selling pitch – they will just switch you off with one click of a mouse. Put yourself in their shoes and imagine what they want from their visit. Internet

It will help if you have an official “email capture process”. This can be done through the “Contact Us” part of the web site or by offering a free download or gift. To make this easier for you your website designed can include an “Auto responder” which ensures your visitor gets an instant reply which is great for establishing the Customer Relationship.

Any emails you send give you the opportunity to sell – but don’t SPAM. They don’t have to be “professionally designed, in fact the best response comes from a simple and personalised email because you are establishing a relationship.

Think about “Pay per Click” as this can be very powerful way to grow sales. I was talking to a friend of mine whose has a specialised IT business. I felt his site was basic and wondered how it generated business for him. He agreed his site was very poor, but then smiled and said “but I do get 90% of my business through it” – Why, because he had invested in “Pay per Click”.

4. Dig for Gold!!

Any existing business with an exiting customer base is sitting on a success goldmine. It’s reputed that sales from existing customers are 50–100 times easier than trying to attract new customers. Wow!

So how do you do this?

  • Increase the frequency that you communicate with clients e.g. through e-mails, letters, phone calls, face to face meetings etc

  • Recognise that not all customers are created equal. It’s likely that 80% of your sales come from 20% of your customers, so make sure you allocate your time in a similar way.

  • Think about the future. What are you currently not offering clients that they may need in the future.

5. Get into the Marketing mindset

A great product or service does not guarantee success. You must get people interested and aware of the business. A great part of business development is achieved through successful Marketing.

Within the UK, we also tend to be far too humble about what we are selling. Be proud, passionate, enthusiastic and loud about what you do!

6. Use the Power of Public Relations

This is like free advertising on TV, Radio, Newspapers etc and getting it can be a lot easier than you think. The value of PR

Most Editors are constantly looking out for good copy, so position yourself as an expert in your field and write something for them. Build a relationship with the media, before long they will be approaching you. But stay in your comfort zone and promote your actual expertise as you will be quickly caught out!

7. Create a Marketing Plan

By adopting different marketing approaches, you can transform your business!

Think about what you currently do and try to expand the range e.g. Direct Mail, e-mail marketing, Telesales, Trade Advertising, Seminars, Networking etc
